Fellowship Devotional: Pointing to the Artist behind the artist

Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 15, 2013

1 Timothy 1:12-17

“Now to the king of the ages, to the immortal, invisible, and only God, may honor and glory be given to him forever and always! Amen.” (1 Timothy 1:17)

The closing of Paul’s greeting to Timothy sums up a major portion of our work as artists. Giving God honor and glory through our art is part of the lifeblood of creatives. The first trait of God we read about in the Bible is that God is creative and as beings made in God’s image, we share, albeit in smaller proportion, the creative gift with God. 

As worship artists we are called to create art that points people to the Artist behind the work. Our work should enable longing for the first Artist, praise for the Artist, joy and peace in the Artist’s presence while creating art that hints at what true Shalom looks, sounds, feels, and tastes like. 

May we be reminded of the great importance of our art in enabling these experiences for others!

Prayer: Immortal, invisible, and only God, help us this week to bring joy, beauty and prophetic fire to the people we serve through the art you have given us.
